Oh yeah! Now I get to start the data transfer all over! Fortunately there are ways to disable this from happening and doing so without needing to disable Windows Update. You can disable automatic reboots from happening, however the user must be logged on, if you are logged off then the computer will still reboot. This is just a reminder that there are at least 3 ways to do anything in Windows. Close the Task Manager. Now you need to open the Group Policy Editor.
Now on the right window pane you will see many choices. However, the third party application Shutdown Guard works well, and even prevents other applications from rebooting your PC.
For users of Professional, Ultimate and other upper-tier versions of Windows, you can adjust a few things in your group policy settings or system registry:.
All non-Home users can apply the same policy change by adding a new key to the registry. You can also download and double click on this registry key to add the key automatically. Keeping your operating system up to date is vital to having a malware-free computer. But even with Windows fully patched, any of your installed applications can be a potential point of entry for attackers should you forget to grab the latest version available.
Utilities such as Secunia's PSI can provide an extra layer of protection by scanning your computer for installed software, and then warning you of potentially unsafe applications that have available updates. Temporary Workarounds The methods below will disable the nagging reminders after Windows Update runs by stopping the associated service.
Permanent Fix Unfortunately most of the everlasting system tweaks out there are unavailable to "Home" users -- that includes even Home Premium versions as these lack the group policy editor and a few other "advanced" Windows features.
Did you know? To disable automatic rebooting , open Policy Editor. Select the Enable option and click save. If the status is set to Enabled, Automatic Updates will not restart a computer automatically during a scheduled installation if a user is logged in to the computer. Instead, Automatic Updates will notify the user to restart the computer. Make sure that you reboot the PC manually otherwise, Windows update might not be installed on your PC.
Thank you for the Great article!!! Windows should have turn out by deafult, because its sooo embarassing when you are holding a pesentation and you have Not Seen the wIndow with the warning in Time… Your computers restarts which may take several minutes and what can you tell the audience in that time??
Maybe jokes?? Well done Windows!! Thanks a lot for this, nothing like walking away from your computer for a 4-hour file transfer to find that Windows took it upon itself to reboot without any regard for what the computer is doing! You need to have Win 7 Ultimate. I have Windows 7 Home Premium. The searcher at the bottom of the Start button stuff did not show gpedit.
I can only surmise that The Man censored the first search results, for my own safety. And think of the kids. I created a shortcut to a version of gpedit.
